Last week I wrote about revolutionary Uranus' immanent entry into Aries on Friday, March 11, and I am compelled to return to the same subject this week. Both planet and sign are about immediacy and discovery, so expect fresh ideas to pop up from time to time about this new seven-year cycle. One of the challenges we’re facing is the unpredictability of Uranus because its essential nature is about freedom from the past. That sounds desirable for those seeking liberation from limiting attitudes and situations. However, as one reader of this blog commented, "I have been waiting for your wisdom and now I find it shrouded in mystery! What awaits us during this chaotic and anxious time?" While Uranus breaks us loose from what has come before, it's not particularly descriptive about what is to come. It is the planet of "now" in the sign of "now."
We spend much of our lives running from or reveling in the past and fearing or anticipating the future. Yet the reality is that we are always in the present, the eternal now that was once the future and will soon be the past. Our minds may travel backward or forward in time yet we are always here. Being conscious of living in this moment is one of the most valuable lessons anyone can learn. In 1971 Baba Ram Dass, formerly Richard Alpert, wrote Be Here Now, a highly influential book in the burgeoning New Age movement. In 1999 Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now presented similar concepts in a different form. Ram Dass' references were primarily Hindu and Tolle's Buddhist, but the essential messages were the same.
It's tough to stay in the present. Egos refer to personal history to tell us who we are or point to our ambitions to shape who we become. Clearly, reflecting on the patterns that brought us to this point is useful and planning for tomorrow is essential for functioning in the modern world. Yet Uranus, the planet of liberation, in the "I" sign Aries is not interested in maintaining identity and supporting the memories and dreams of the ego. This transit is about breaking the chains of history, cutting us loose from where we've been and freeing us from expectations of where we are supposed to go. Yes, this can feel chaotic and regression is a natural response to uninvited change. Who doesn't want to go back to a safe place when the storms of transformation blow away familiar landmarks?
Retreat, though, is not a viable option yet going forward into the maelstrom is almost unthinkable. The only safe place is now. Fortunately, Uranus in Aries isn’t about making plans or reminiscing. We are not required to understand how we got here or where we're going. Lightning strikes of awareness and newly emerging images of human potential are happening all around us. We need simply to pause in our self-directed processes to breathe and to be. Letting go of trying to get somewhere to fully experience the present will answer all of our questions.
