Supermoon Lights Up the Perseid Meteor Shower

Mon, 08/04/2014 - 11:52 am PST by Karen A Kay

Every summer I plan my campouts around the best viewing times for meteor showers, and I highly recommend you do the same. Getting away from city lights makes all the difference when it comes to stargazing.

This year could be a different story, however! The annual Perseid meteor shower -- the largest of the year -- peaks from Sunday, August 10 to Wednesday, August 13, 2014. And get this: There is a Full Supermoon in Aquarius on August, 10, too!

The bright light of the Supermoon could make it harder to see and wish upon the falling stars, but just imagine the beauty if you do catch a glimpse of a fireball shooting past the biggest, brightest Full Moon of 2014! Surely we'll be able to spot a few.

Last year I was on a backpacking trip high in the Goat Rocks Wilderness of Washington State, and the viewing was spectacular. Especially on the peak night in those quiet hours before dawn, when the Perseids produce 50 or more meteors per hour!

The year before that I was at a cabin in the country near Detroit Lake, Ore. during the Perseid meteor shower, and there were so many stars shooting across the sky so fast I barely had time to wish on them all.

I'm not yet sure from where I'll be watching this year, but there's no way I'm missing out. It's the perfect time to throw a stargazing party, too!

If you can't get out of town this weekend to the prime Perseid Meteor Shower viewing spots, maybe you can plan to catch another meteor shower in the country soon. Check out this 2014 meteor shower viewing guide from our friends over at EarthSky.com.

Time to make more camping plans!

To scientists, asteroids are just a class of small celestial bodies that fall into orbit around the Sun.
