Everyone loves games, and when the weather won't accommodate outdoor play, games around a dining room table are the very best way to keep us laughing and to bring us closer. But what game should YOU play? Before you totter into the living room with the entire stack of game boxes from that shelf in the closet, consider this: Who's playing, and what games will they enjoy? Use these astrological tips to help you make your selection!
Aries (March 21 - April 19)
Aries' planet is Mars, the God of War … Mr. Assertion and Aggression. So it goes without saying that competitive games are their favorite. War games, for example -- even older games, like Battleship, allows them to vicariously defeat the enemy on a field of battle. And if they don't emerge victorious, they'll know the reason why. Risk, of course, is even better. It allows these fiery folks to win the battle, the war and take over the world, too. What could possibly be more satisfying for them?
Taurus (April 20 - May 20)
Taurus' favorite hobby is accumulation. Money is their favorite thing to collect, of course, but property and possessions are a close second. So what board game could they possibly enjoy more than Monopoly? It allows them to amass property, businesses, even entire neighborhoods. It's practice for what they want in their "real" life. Of course, the very title of the game Payday will also get their adrenaline pumping, so if they don't know how to play, teach them. Just be prepared to lose. Big time.
Gemini (May 21 - June 20)
Geminis are ruled by Mercury, the most cerebral planet out there. Mercury specializes in quick thinking, which is passed on to Geminis. What board games require those skills? Well, Trivial Pursuit, for one. That's their absolute specialty, since they're famous for knowing just a touch of everything about everything. Then there's Scrabble, the word game that requires players to have a terrific vocabulary and the ability to spell. Warn anyone who bets against a Gemini that wagering really wouldn't be fair ... to the challenger.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22)
Cancers and kids ... they're inseparable. So when it comes to board games, they'll dash down the children's aisle with their own kids or their nieces and nephews in mind, and choose games that kids would enjoy most. For starters, the classic that all kids absolutely must learn: Checkers. (And if it takes 73 times for them to teach their favorite child the rules, they'll sit there and play -- all 73 times). They'll also treat them to Candyland, Operation and Pictionary ... all with the patience of a saint.
Leo (July 23 - Aug 22)
Of course, Leos love to be the star of the show, and yes, they'll need to win, even if they're playing against children. (The excuse will be that they have to "teach" the kids to lose, for their own sake.) The thing is, they're right. Their favorite board game, though, will be Yahtzee -- because it's luck plus skill, which is the combination they believe in most.
Virgo (Aug 23 - Sept 22)
Virgos, of all the creatures the Universe has created, are the most precise -- so only the most cerebral, meticulous games will appeal to them. Dominoes, which involves laying down tiles in an exact mathematical order, keeping track of what's been laid and what's been played in your mind, and distracting your opponent from doing the same is perfect. With that brain, they can win at any game -- but this is the one game that will prove to everyone how good they really are.
Libra (Sept 23 - Oct 22)
Libras love any activities that are specially designed for two -- no more, no less. They hate going anywhere alone, staying home alone or being alone. So when it comes to board games, their favorites are always classic one-on-ones: Backgammon, Cribbage, etc. (Not Chess, though. That takes too long. After all, Libra is an air sign, and air loves movement.) There's also a clever side to Libra that they don't often show to others, so -- just between us -- don't ever expect to beat them.
Scorpio (Oct 23 - Nov 21)
Secrets. Intrigue. Mystery. That's what it's all about for Scorpios. So when it comes to board games, there's absolutely nothing like the original mystery game to whet their appetite: Clue. The very fact that there are several endings possible is enough to get them going, but if that doesn't do it, there are aisles and aisles in toy stores, listed under "Mysteries" -- and some are even listed under "Murder Mysteries." Those, of course, would allow them to combine their special talents: analyst, detective, and assassin.
Sagittarius (Nov 22 - Dec 21)
Geminis love Trivial Pursuit because it involves a little bit of everything they know a little bit about. But Sagittarians love it because they happen to know a lot about any category they choose. In short, centaurs are unbeatable in that particular category. (In any others, however ... they'll lay down with their horse-tails between their legs.) Adventurous Sags also love ethnic games of any kind, so when they can actually find someone who knows how to play Mahjongg -- well, talk about happy campers!
Capricorn (Dec 22 - Jan 19)
For Capricorn, a board game has to be orderly, organized and extremely strenuous on an intellectual level. And what's the only game that fits that description? Chess. Honestly, does any other game actually apply in all those departments? Hardly. Chess involves planning and a high degree of intelligence -- not to mention strategy, the most important quality of all.
Aquarius (Jan 20 - Feb 18)
The most obvious choice for this ultra-intellectual sign, by name and description, would have to be Cranium. Since Aquarius is the sign that's known for being The Brain (the inventor, the scientist, etc.), it's definitely a game they excel at. But their all-encompassing love of sci-fi means one thing: no matter how long ago this game came out or how well some folks have it memorized, the game that was absolutely created for Aquarius was Dungeons & Dragons. Period.
Pisces (Feb 19 - March 20)
Sorry seems like the perfect game for a Pisces, since arranging, accepting and extending apologies are their specialties. That might not be a bad second runner-up, but if they're spiritually inclined and not afraid of the afterlife, an Ouija board is far more appropriate. It allows them to give their spiritual side free reign. Otherwise, there's Bingo. This game blends every age, race and gender, uniting them all in the belief that riches are just a step away. Either way, faith is the common denominator -- and Pisces equals faith.
